Dr. Mohamed Bin Awang Lah is a visionary leader and pioneer in Malaysia’s telecommunications and Internet services industry. He played a critical role in establishing Malaysia’s early Internet infrastructure and has extensive expertise in network engineering, cybersecurity, and broadband development. Currently, as the Founder and Managing Director of Neutral Transmission Malaysia Sdn Bhd , he leads strategic initiatives in telecommunications infrastructure.
Previously, Dr. Mohamed served as the Chief Executive Officer of JARING Communications Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s first Internet Service Provider (ISP), until 2010. He was instrumental in the launch of several pioneering initiatives, including the first long-distance IP-over-Fibre network (2.5 Gbps) in 1999, the first nationwide IP-VPN infrastructure in 2001, and a large-scale satellite broadband project for 2,000 remote schools in 2004. He also spearheaded Malaysia’s broadband telephony system with the 015 numbering prefix and led the largest wireless broadband deployment in 2005.
His contributions to cybersecurity and Internet governance date back to his tenure at MIMOS, where he led network security initiatives that resulted in the formation of MyCERT (now part of CyberSecurity Malaysia). He was also Malaysia’s first domain manager for .MY, laying the groundwork for MYNIC BERHAD. Prior to his involvement in the technology sector, he was a lecturer and deputy dean at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Malaya.
Dr. Mohamed holds a PhD and a First-Class Honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from King’s College, University of London. He has received honorary doctorates from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) and Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN). He is a Fellow of the Academy of Sciences Malaysia and has held leadership roles in various industry bodies, including as the founding chairman of the Malaysia Internet Provider Association (MyIX).
